Sofie (The Female Gaze)

The Female Gaze - 50 Films Directed by Women

Date(s)

Sofie

Danemark 1992 | vostang | 146’ | c | De : Liv Ullmann | Avec : Karen-Lise Mynster, Ghita Nórby, Erland Josephson

Denmark, 1886. 29-year-old Sofie lives with her affluent, extended Jewish family, but her happiness is marred by parental fears that she will become a spinster. Despite her love for a gentile painter, she is manoeuvred into marriage with a respectable Jewish cousin…

« Like Fanny and Alexander, Sofie is an exquisitely detailed, leisurely paced period drama celebrating family life in all its joys and sorrows. Although it would seem almost certain that Ullmann drew artistic inspiration from Bergman, her film is entirely her own. It comes as no surprise that Ullmann is a wonderful director of actors, and her cast performs as a flawless ensemble. Yet for all its superb acting Sofie is - and rightly should be - a film of images that linger in the memory - of people gathering and parting, of faces alternately glowing with smiles and wracked with grief, of everyone caught up in the ebb and flow of life itself. » (The Washington Post)

« A movie full of unexpected delicacies. The style Ullmann has chosen here is restrained and classical, yet brimming with unexpressed emotion. Out of the disciplined observations she has fashioned a story that is full and richly comprehensive, but also nearly microscopic in its sensitivity to nuance. » (Bill Hinson)
