Rana's Wedding (En attendant Cannes)

Rétrospective des trésors cachés du Festival de Cannes

Date(s)

Rana’s Wedding

Al-Quds fi yawm akhar Palestine-Pays-Bas 2002 | vostang+all | 90’ | c | De : Hany Abu-Assad  | Avec : Clara Khoury, Khalifa Natour, Ismael Dabbag ► Semaine de la critique, Festival de Cannes 2002

Rana's father is going to the airport at 4 p.m., and she can either get married, or leave the country with him. He supplies her with a list of eligible bachelors who have asked for her hand in marriage. But she is in love with Khalil. Can she find him, ask him to marry her, get her hair done, gather the relatives and get married - all before 4 o'clock?

« This interesting Palestinian movie locates a vein of absurdist comedy in the impossible conditions in occupied East Jerusalem. Like a screwball heroine, Rana must be wed before the day is out, or she'll have to leave the country with her father. Fortunately, she has a likely candidate in mind. Unfortunatetly, he's not answering his mobile and when she tracks him down he's in Ramallah. There are some very striking sequences here, like the clever little riff on surveillance cameras. » (TimeOut Film Guide)

« Clara Khoury, often filmed in close-ups, gives a deeply sensitive, unsentimental performance, and the feelings that crowd on her face (sometimes more than one at a time) run the gamut from despair to ambivalence to hysterical frustration to tenderness and joy. » (The New York Times)

« This small, subtle gem offers a vivid portrait of life in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories, presenting its message with an intelligence and vibrancy that celebrates the human spirit. In its quiet but highly focused way, Rana’s Wedding speaks volumes about the human condition and ultimately transcends its geography with a universal message that any right-minded person will recognize and cherish. This is an extraordinary film, with a rare blend of art and intellect that challenges without lecturing and emboldens without sloganeering. » (Film Threat)
