The First American Liberation 1918

Date(s)

-
(Cet événement n'a pas de description en français) The liberation of Luxembourg by the U.S. Army in September 1944 is ever-present in our collective memory. Only very few know that American soldiers have liberated the Grand Duchy once before. After four long years of occupation, the German soldiers finally leave Luxembourg following the Armistice of November 11, 1918, that put an end to the hostilities of the First World War. The German retreat is closely followed by the victorious Entente armies. Soldiers of the American Expeditionary Forces (A.E.F.) are the first to be welcomed as liberators by the people of Luxembourg. Two Infantry Divisions (the 33rd and the 5th) will have a prolonged stay in the Grand Duchy, with the mission to guard the rear echelon of the newly formed Army of Occupation in Germany. This exhibition tells the story of the American soldiers in Luxembourg and their cohabitation with the local population.
