Companhia Nacional de Bailado (CNB), the National Ballet Company of Portugal, was established in Lisbon in 1977 and is the only company with a permanent group of artists that currently ensure regular seasons at the Teatro Camões as well as touring the country and abroad. In collaboration with the Mudam and to mark the closing of its comprehensive exhibition, the Grand Théâtre presents the company’s collaboration with renowned Portuguese artist João Penalva Quinze bailarinos e tempo incerto (Fifteen dancers and changeable time) for which he designed the set and costumes. Drawing on his experience as a dancer and visual artist, Penalva is comfortable moving freely from one medium to another, and by using diverse materials, creates artworks that combine language and image, and develops poetic fictions that leave much room for interpretation.
As the title suggests, choreographer Rui Lopes Graça created this for fifteen dancers from the company in a piece that seeks to stimulate the individual relationship of each spectator with the presence of dancers on stage, who are temporarily bound to a specific set, sound and lighting. It is the soundscape conceived by David Cunningham that induces the spectator to tread down multiple individual paths that are not always recognisable, and are at times mysterious, threatening or exhilarating.
[FR] Danseur, chorégraphe et directeur artistique portugais reconnu internationalement, João Penalva se distingue également comme performeur et plasticien avec ses interventions dans toutes sortes de lieux artistiques il est d’ailleurs actuellement au Mudam avec une exposition dont la fin coïncidera avec la présentation au Grand Théâtre, en ouverture de saison, de Quinze bailarinos e tempo incerto (Quinze danseurs et temps incertain).
Dans cette production où João Penalva signe la direction artistique, la scénographie et les costumes, le chorégraphe Rui Lopes Graça vise à intensifier la relation individuelle entre chaque spectateur et quinze danseurs, dont la performance, c’est sa particularité, ne développe aucun récit.
Le paysage sonore conçu par David Cunningham entraîne les spectateurs dans plusieurs cheminements individuels, lointains et proches, pas toujours reconnaissables, parfois mystérieux, menaçants ou exaltants. Grâce à cette succession d’images façonnées par le son, les spectateurs projettent leur propre récit sur cette chorégraphie, se confrontant ainsi aux limites de leur imagination, expérimentant la liberté non conventionnelle de choisir eux-mêmes des parcours uniques inspirés par leurs expériences individuelles, leurs souvenirs et leur personnalité.

Im Konzept der von João Penalva künstlerisch geleiteten Produktion Quinze bailarinos e tempo incerto (Choreographie: Rui Lopes Graça) spielt jeder einzelne Zuschauer eine entscheidende Rolle: Es ist an ihm, den von dramatischen Strukturen losgelösten Bewegungen der Tänzer und den von der Soundkulisse hervorgerufenen Bildern sein eigenes, von individuellen Erfahrungen und Erinnerungen geprägtes Narrativ zu verleihen.
Die Aufführung findet in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Mudam statt, das João Penalva eine Ausstellung widmet (3. März bis 16. September 2018). Bevor er sich der bildenden Kunst widmete, arbeitete João Penalva, geboren 1949 in Lissabon, als professioneller Tänzer mit Pina Bausch, Gerhard Bohner und Jean Pomares. Von 1976 bis 1981 studierte er Fine Arts an der Chelsea School of Art. Penalva lebt und arbeitet in London.
