Talk in English in the context of the "From Dark to Light" exhibition by Simon Philippo, curator of the mineralogy department and exhibition curator
In August 2020, 9,500 exceptional minerals (total weight: 2,349 kg) from the Cassedanne collection were brought from Brazil to Luxembourg where they are integrated into the already very rich mineralogy collection of the National Museum of Natural History.
Five field trips in Brazil and the shared passion of mineralogy created a true friendship relation between professor Cassedanne (professor emeritus at the Rio University and the author of over 280 publications) and Simon Philippo, the curator of the mineralogy department at the National Museum of Natural History Luxembourg.
The friendship led Professor Cassedanne at the end of a deserving life to donate his unique private collection of minerals to the National Museum of Natural History Luxembourg.
Jacques Cassedanne knows pegmatites of Minas Gerais, Espirito Santo and Nordeste as no other. He collected and analyzed thousands of samples, described mineral deposits and followed the advancements of the works at each visit … and published his observations in many articles. He was accepted by the ‘garimpeiros' for his humility and his disinterest of the lucrative aspects and has never been stingy with informations to help them in the prospect exploitation of the deposits. All this knowledge makes him a reference scientist in this particular field.
