Priest

GB 1994 | vostf | 105' | c | De : Antonia Bird | Avec : Linus Roache, Tom Wilkinson, Robert Carlyle ► Teddy Award, Berlinale 1995

« The film calls on the traditions of the best radical drama. Wickedly sardonic and very moving, with an outstanding performance from Roache at the centre of a fine cast, it clearly works a treat for cinema audiences. In the opening sequence a priest uses a large crucifix as a battering ram, which gives a fair idea of the level of ecclesiastical debate. The film's true subject, however, is emotional courage, and that it has in spades. » (TimeOut Film Guide)

« Provocative films like Priest rarely arrive without creating some sort of controversy. By not compromising her vision (which is similar to that of fellow British film maker Ken Loach), director Antonia Bird has fashioned a picture that not only stirs up a hornet's nest of timely and volatile spiritual issues, but faces up to homosexuality and incest with a frankness which few films dare. » (Reel Views)

« An exceptional movie and a powerful drama. » (San Francisco Chronicle)
